Halo 4 Competitive Skill Rank Announcement

We are pleased to announce, just days away from the worldwide Halo 4 launch and the first MLG Halo 4 tournament in Dallas, the Competitive Skill Rank system in Halo 4. The CSR will appear post-launch in an update to Halo Waypoint and associated Smartglass applications.

When will it launch?
The short version is CSR will launch early next year when it’s ready. We have an extensive post-launch plan for Halo 4, including DLC, playlist updates, and title updates. As soon as we have a confirmed launch date for the Waypoint update that includes CSR, we’ll make an announcement. Set your expectations for release timing appropriately since this will require delicate tuning, testing and implementation for Waypoint Web, Waypoint Console and Smartglass integration and is a feature designed specifically for the competitive community.

What is it?
At Halo 4’s launch, the competitive skill system will measure your performance against other players in Halo 4 War Games and use this information to match you up against opponents of comparable skill ranks. When the CSR system is fully implemented post-launch, Waypoint will assign each player a visible and detailed Skill Rank, viewable in the player profile section of Halo Waypoint.

How will it rank me?
All players will be ranked on a per-hopper basis, so, for example, you will have a unique CSR for your Slayer Pro games vs. your CTF games. CSR is currently planned to use a familiar and easy to understand 1-50 scale (subject to change or alteration). Your CSR will go up and down based on match outcomes.

Which playlists will support CSR?
All competitive playlists will support and track CSR. As the playlists will continuously change post-launch, the exact list of playlists that will support CSR will be determined when the system is ready to drop.

Will a CSR be ‘assigned to me’ once the system launches? Or do I need to start fresh?
Matchmaking and hoppers will be tracking and analyzing data from Day 1, and when the final settings for CSR are in place, we’ll make the call on whether to use existing data as a baseline for your CSR, or to start everyone fresh in new playlists.

Why the delay?
We know how important skill rank is, and we take skill integrity very seriously – we want to make sure we’ve taken the time to test, tune, and balance the CSR system in a live environment, and identify problems and potential exploits before launching the system publically.

Taking the time to test and tune the system ensures we can deliver a very accurate and meaningful skill rank, and gives our competitive playlists time to mature to for optimize a wide range of playlist and game settings.

Enjoy the launch!
We’re incredibly excited for Halo 4 to launch, and to see you at one of our worldwide events, or online November 6th. We see this announcement as just one of many new experiences and features coming post-launch to Halo 4 and are excited to share more with you in the future.

amazing work with the CSR Idea Laughing i cant wait to dig in november 6th

Rizotic | 11.02.12 2:45 PM

uhhh.. i would be happy with this, except i have a feeling they mean it is only visible in halo waypoint and not in the actual game itself, meaning if you want to know someones rank you have to look them up on halo waypoint... which would be a real let down...

RUDZKl | 11.02.12 2:48 PM

I take back all the negative shiz I said about you guys and apologise.

If you had always planned on doing this that's cool, if you hadn't and have decided to implement it due to the huge outcry, thank you either way for listening to us.

You guys are the best!

A good addition but make sure the 1-50 rank is visible in game, not just on waypoint. This is vital.

Game....Blouses!

INoble Dragon | 11.02.12 3:15 PM

Thanks god!

This is awesome, a bit sad that is early next year.

But since the promise of "Fileshare" in Summer.

I'm expecting this December 31, 2012 or January 1, 2013.

343 certainly doesn't do promises that can't keep...

eLantern | 11.02.12 3:15 PM

I'm not going to thank baby Jesus, but I will say that this is exciting news. Good idea 343i.

INoble Dragon | 11.02.12 3:15 PM

Also what robjduglas said.

Visual in-game, not just Waypoint!

WHo iZ GRuNT | 11.02.12 3:21 PM

after the new year and only viewable on waypoint? 343 are you kidding me?

Astro Almighty | 11.02.12 3:28 PM

Isis and Osiris | 11.02.12 3:28 PM

Thanks a bunch 343.  This is what we begged and pleaded for and hopefully it's as good as our reaction to this announcement!

Uzair Chief | 11.02.12 3:34 PM

Awesome, best game company!

Make it visual in-game!

goldthreat | 11.02.12 3:36 PM

Awesome, thanks a lot! We just need to make it visible in game too and we will be happy Smile

sonny21004 | 11.02.12 3:39 PM

SickLikeTheWind | 11.02.12 3:47 PM

Yes!

Polo147 | 11.02.12 3:49 PM

Not to mention, who's to say it would even update instantly? You may have to wait until a certain hour of each day to see your "current" rank. Then play and check back later to see if you got that rank you wanted.. IMHO it seems like a lot of work that most people won't bother with.. Just make it visible in game.

Mattster092 | 11.02.12 3:56 PM

I was ready to accept the fact that there wouldn't be any skill rating.... well well, you have even more of my respect 343 Laughing

My only hopes now are that you do add it in-game, which by the sound of the bulletin, will eventually happen :3

XI unknownz IX | 11.02.12 3:59 PM

I thank you alot for implementing this 343 but you gotta make it visible in game next to my name and have it change on a per game basis. This keeps my striving to win and I wont always want to have to check waypoint. Also I like to see where everyone elses CSR in my match is and how good they are without ahving to look up 7 people before a game starts. Make it visible in game as a number next to my name in each hopper and I will love you forever 343.

A New Syn | 11.02.12 4:01 PM

<3

i r awesum lolz | 11.02.12 4:09 PM

Here come the no-life boosters -.- Reach rank system was better! I always loved H3 highest skill but dam, after a week or two, the game was destroyed by boosters. I hear that on matchmaking you decided to not show your rank other players? To avoid boosters or whatever? Well why counter that brilliant idea with this useless one? I was looking forward to the midnight release so I could jump into matchmaking with friends and enjoy myself but after what? a week or two? We get reasons to play against boosters -.- I am unhappy with this to say the least.

XI unknownz IX | 11.02.12 4:11 PM

Do you even know what a "booster is" without halo 3's experience point system it already takes out peoples ability to boost. The CSR probably works in a different way.

XI unknownz IX | 11.02.12 4:12 PM

and they will still have social playlists. <3 343 =) AS LONG AS I CAN SEE IT IN GAME THAT IS =)

XI unknownz IX | 11.02.12 4:16 PM

I hope they come out with just one more bulletin saying it is in-game as well and I will kneel down and hail 343 industries.

Legendary Rumor | 11.02.12 4:32 PM

If I can't see everyone's rank in game...  I will continue playing Halo 3, thank you.  If I can see it..  I will finally have complete respect for 343.  I'm close, but this is key for me.

DuckFuzzy | 11.02.12 4:35 PM

I am all for a visible ranking system, but how are you going to keep people from selling accounts and boosting and all the other things that happened with this system in Halo 3?
I hope you can make it work, change things here and there, but the common denominator - which you cannot change - is the players.  I am hopeful, but very skeptical.

d0nkatron | 11.02.12 4:41 PM

Thank you so much for not listening to Franky on this one. He sounded like the only human being who was against skill ranks. Can't wait now. This was the only thing stopping me from giving H4 a 10/10. I don't need it to show in lobbies. I just want to know my own rank.

PhiGGyyy | 11.02.12 4:43 PM

THANK GOD THAT 343i HAS TAKEN OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE LOVE YOU THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! <3

chabco | 11.02.12 4:43 PM

Wow I wasn't expecting this news(although I was hoping for it everyday!), but why isn't in-game, I want to show off my achieved rank!

Sergeant Novak | 11.02.12 4:43 PM

I personally am not one of the big advocates on this, but I'm happy that a lot of our competitive player fans will be happy about this. Also I'm hoping you guys will be adding on to custom games post-launch. A good amount of fans aren't totally satisfied from what they are hearing about the current number of gametypes and options.  Anyways keep up the stellar work guys, can't wait for Halo 4!

PhiGGyyy | 11.02.12 4:46 PM

@chabco, it will be in game once they release the update early next year Smile

ll Targaryen ll | 11.02.12 4:51 PM

SOO AWESOM! SCREW YOU HATERS!! 343 CAME THROUGH SOO QUICKLY! BAD KIDS WILL BE SHOWN TO BE BAD KIDS! Laughing

MAS AttacK | 11.02.12 5:03 PM

"Waypoint will assign each player a visible and detailed Skill Rank, viewable in the player profile section of Halo Waypoint."
I was excited until I read that. Might as well be the BPR which no one ever looked at so what's gonna be the point?

daman2 | 11.02.12 5:17 PM

This is literally the one thing that was missing from this game.

A competitive skill rank kept me going back to Halo 3 waaaay past Halo Reach's launch. Reach's Arena had nowhere near the same attraction.

This is the one thing I was really hoping for for Halo 4, and I had lost all hope recently. Even without it, Halo 4 still seemed perfect- but now it really is going to be the perfect game.

My only teeency weeency gripe is that there wont be any playlists without CSR integration. I think the reason that it worked so well with Halo 3 is that there were 'social' playlists that I could easily jump into with my noob friends and not care if I lose, and then there were the ranked playlists which I'd only play when I wanted to play properly and up my rank. If we could have a split, y'know, with a few ranked playlists and a few social, that'd be great! (Also, guests might be annoying when it comes to CSR)

Seriously though, this is amazing news. 343- you really have got EVERYTHING right!

mega delta rega | 11.02.12 5:17 PM

That is some great news to hear about the Rank system

Psycho Seal A89 | 11.02.12 5:39 PM

I've done my fair amount of bitching about this and I'm slightly disappointed the game isnt shipping with this straight away but I have to say THANKYOU 343 for listening to us, thankyou.

XI unknownz IX | 11.02.12 5:50 PM

Awesome but visible in game is a must...

PeteAnts | 11.02.12 6:20 PM

Visible ingame lobbies would make this perfect <3

teedge28 | 11.02.12 6:30 PM

Your CSR rank must be easily visible in game lobbies perhaps next to your SR, other wise it'll end up being just a B.P.R. 2.0. which basically had very little meaning in Halo: Reach.

A Critical H1T | 11.02.12 6:39 PM

I am still canceling my pre order. This is pure BS, we need ranks at LAUNCH or else this game will be uncompetitive. I won't even try to win now ;/ Back to Halo 2 Vista ;/

In all seriousness, this should be evidence enough that 343 isn't playing around here. Rank is in Halo 4 and if it takes a little bit longer after launch to make a system BETTER than 1-50, i am all for it.

A Critical H1T | 11.02.12 6:40 PM

(though it i was quite hilarious the haters are now praising 343 as gods xD)

zz B O N E S | 11.02.12 6:41 PM

perfect, but you need to see it in the game, almost all of my friends do not interact with halo past ingame.

XI unknownz IX | 11.02.12 6:50 PM

Ingame my 343 homies =)

Avitra | 11.02.12 6:59 PM

343! You are amazing for doing this. BUT! Listen to the fans! This absolutely HAS to be visible in-game. What is the point of even having it otherwise. I want to be able to join a game, look at my opponents profile, and be able to get some idea of their skill - and how hard the match is going to be based on that. I don't have time to enter every gamertag on Halo waypoint to see what their skill is. Please, for the sake of your fans make this visible in-game. I am not alone, read these comments!

Tuurby | 11.02.12 7:29 PM

I agree with Avitra

XI unknownz IX | 11.02.12 7:43 PM

In-game is the most important thing I ask for.
Other minor things to take into account would be to base it on W/L and not take K/D into account at all, otherwise this encourages selfish play, stat-whoring, and discourages teamwork and communication.

Derpology | 11.02.12 7:44 PM

This is fantastic news! Thank you.

Gaviao123 | 11.02.12 8:17 PM

343 industries i looove youuuu

le Pryme | 11.02.12 8:21 PM

make the rank visible in game and it will be even better but this is better then nothing

Dop3Fish | 11.02.12 8:29 PM

Hmm.... Man, I have to agree with everyone on this :\ It HAS to be in-game for it to work..... otherwise it'll just be like Halo Reach's waypoint rank (which I never knew existed until a few months ago... ). I would NEVER say this.... ever for any other situation when it comes to how you guys have developed this game but, please.... please please please just make the CSR as close to Halo 3's rank system as you can >.< . The competitive Halo players need it and it won't harm the gameplay for the recreational players... The ONLY issue of course is the "boosters" hmm.... :[ How do we take care of them... BAWGH whatever, I trust you guys will find a fair medium to this debacle. Only time will tell, good luck 343i <3

Derpology | 11.02.12 9:03 PM

I also do agreed that it needs to be visible in-game.

Mythic Pilot | 11.02.12 9:05 PM

yet so many is stil bitching out .. worst community ever ?

ToXiiXz | 11.02.12 9:08 PM

Fucl yeah!!! I'm gonna.have real fun in halo 4 ! 343i=best company in the world!

Fleabus | 11.02.12 9:11 PM

YOU HAD ME SO WORRIED. Awesome work 343, looking out for the fans Smile

A2 is R1PPIN | 11.02.12 9:12 PM

Yeah 343 its awesome you're bringing it back but please make it visible in game, not like the BPR rubbish from reach.

XI unknownz IX | 11.02.12 9:12 PM

We aren't bitching lol, we are putting our feedback out there. Which is what makes this community great.

R3CKL3SSG4M3R5 | 11.02.12 9:25 PM

343 is the reason why i learned about Halo too much.hahahaha

LockSkywalker | 11.02.12 9:45 PM

So its only visible on Waypoint? Not in game?

Aeterna Mortis | 11.02.12 9:53 PM

Well done 343. Considering the fate of all of Halo's previous ranking systems, I think you've made some good decisions here.

l Whitecrow l | 11.02.12 10:05 PM

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

okay im experienced in Halo and all so im not a noop but just so i dont Yoink! up my rank cuz reach has messed me up. 1 being best right? i know i sound like a moron b ut still xP

l Whitecrow l | 11.02.12 10:12 PM

Wait this is only visible on waypoint and not in lobbies? Ughh... whats that point? Make it visible in lobbies or dont make it visible at all.

Raskulz | 11.02.12 10:13 PM

This...? And you took out Theatre from Campaign, as well as no flying UNSC vehicles?

Let's wait 4 years to listen to our own community and then give them the run around and give them what they want.

Guess like the competitive community I'll have to wait a year and a half to get any results out of this...

#Disappointed

LockSkywalker | 11.02.12 10:13 PM

agreed. Why do all the work if nobodys gonna see it? im sure they will figure something out

Careful Timing | 11.02.12 10:15 PM

Do bear in mind that the rank will be visible in the player profile section ON HALO WAYPOINT. If this visible rank is brought to an in-game level where other players could check this without leaving the game, this would be favourable.

LockSkywalker | 11.02.12 10:19 PM

Another idea could be giving us a 1-50 number on waypoint.com then give us a symbol by our gamertag in-game that show if ur lvl 1-10, 11-20, 21-30, 31-40, 41-49, 50?

GamingCollege | 11.02.12 10:25 PM

I guess this is good news I really didnt care if it had it or not, but hey thats just me.

XI unknownz IX | 11.02.12 10:36 PM

As long as they make it visible in game I think its pretty sick, great job so far, really enjoyed watching the gameplay on mlg stream. keep up the work 343. Make Dem CSR"s visible =)

MTHunter | 11.02.12 10:48 PM

And then I cried...

DreamTheater05 | 11.02.12 11:08 PM

This is cool... but please make it visible in game. This almost means nothing without it being able to be seen in the lobbies. I don't really know why Reach had to take out their ranking system to begin with. The ranking system was a huge part of Halo. It worked. Please listen to everyone here. This is what will keep everyone competitive! Which is the whole point, right?

Irrashaimase 1 | 11.02.12 11:34 PM

I don't care if it's not in the game at launch, as long as it is in.

Ev1l D3m0n | 11.03.12 12:21 AM

Meh.

Please Please Please!! Make It Visible in Game!!!.. Make it Happen 343 and The Majority of the Halo Community Will Love You FOREVER!!!

Callsign FENRIR | 11.03.12 1:00 AM

Huh. I guess they caught wind of the constant "WHEREZ MY VIS'BLE RANK?!" threads. I guess whining does get your way.

Polo147 | 11.03.12 1:32 AM

343 if you're reading this, Do not pay attention to the few people saying THANK YOU initially.. Those people do not fully understand that you're putting it in waypoint ONLY. Make it visible ingame or at least make it more clear for the people not being able to comprehend this.

VISIBLE INGAME IS A MUST

GENKIE | 11.03.12 1:47 AM

I was about to buy cod because of the gay ranking system 343 industries have. But now im looking forward to it

FTG Insanity | 11.03.12 3:19 AM

I am very happy that 343i is including a skill-based ranking system but I do agree that it should be shown in game. Either way, Halo 4 has so much that will keep me playing for years to come. Having so many choices in primaries brings a fresh and enjoyable experience to the game (Yay for upgraded DMR, BR, Light Rifle, Sniper Rifle, and Beam Rifle) and removing most of the annoying factors that were in Reach will bring back lost players.

Invelity | 11.03.12 4:06 AM

I really honest to God hope that everyone who posted "Thank you 343i" will soon realize that nothing was mentioned about the CSR system being implemented into the ACTUAL GAME. Everything is, as of right now, apparently exclusive for Waypoint, meaning you will have to access this website every time you want to see your rank for a specific playlist. Watch this video www.youtube.com/watch

Waroull | 11.03.12 4:08 AM

I totally agree, it is very essential that this ranking feature showoff will be visible in-game 343.

I think that 343 wants to get rid of people who sell accounts, but how does that matter. People dont care about that aspect, they much rather have a visible rank they can brag and showoff to their freinds. Halo 4 seems like the perfect halo game from what i have seen, dont let a thing like a ranking system you already have annonced limit that "perfect" halo experience for the big majority of your community who actually wants that so badly as you can see.

But good news though you are actually listening in terms of that. Please listen again, and let the rank be visible, trust me when i say it will have more pros than cons. No doubt about taht.

Sierra B293 | 11.03.12 4:41 AM

Make it exclusive to Waypoint only. Sick of all these whiney people wanting just to see some silly number next to their name. I know that I am getting better at the game by continually doing well, you don't need some number to tell you that.

II SHABUTIE II | 11.03.12 4:43 AM

"SOO AWESOM! SCREW YOU HATERS!! 343 CAME THROUGH SOO QUICKLY! BAD KIDS WILL BE SHOWN TO BE BAD KIDS!" Those are the type of comments that keep 343 from showing the ranks in game. To save you the time I'm a terrible 45 in terrible Halo 3.

J Fuzz 007 | 11.03.12 4:54 AM

I was just reading theough this, and I noticed one of XI unknownz IX's posts. He or she brings up a really good point: DON'T base in on Kill/Death in TEAM matches!
With that said, this is gonna be AWESOME if it's in-game!!!

HeadPoppinNinja | 11.03.12 5:16 AM

Everyone should chill out for a second. If you watched the live feed earlier this week with MajorNelson you would know that you can access Waypoint in game. I am just super happy to see them add what made Halo 2 and 3 so addicting. Skill Rank= Earn it; XP rank= just grind.

Hup2thepenguin | 11.03.12 5:56 AM

Lol, I don't know anything about the ranks so I don't know what this means.

tonyfivetimez | 11.03.12 6:20 AM

Just make it visible on my profile in game so i dont have to keep coming to this website to check whether ive gone up or down. Thanks. <3

DTHstinguished | 11.03.12 6:25 AM

343i I really appreciate everything that you have done, you guys are doing a great job! PLEASE continue to listen to the fans so that the CSR is not in vein and PLEASE make the CSR VISIBLE TO OTHER PLAYERS! This would be like having a million dollars and your still living in a homeless shelter. People want to see your progression in life in all situations (especially in Halo 4). Thanks for listening and doing such a wonderful job with the Halo series!

The Ownage | 11.03.12 6:29 AM

Who cares if it's not visible in game to everyone? From my experience, most people who want that simply want to brag and/or swing their e-peen around.

I just want it implemented in a visible-to-the-player way because it gives me goals I can set for myself, lets me know how I stack up to the general Halo population, and will help motivate everyone to actually try to win in ranked games.

You still get 90%+ of the advantages of a ranked system even if they wind up not making it globally visible in game.

GaM ParaGoN | 11.03.12 6:31 AM

As long as it is or will be visible in game I am extremely pleased. As a company 343 has shown exceptional foresight without forgetting to listen to the most important thing for a company, their fans. I honestly have trouble putting my thoughts into words, but I'll leave it at the fact that I am incredibly thankful there is going to be a visible ranking system. The reason RPGs are so successful is that they have a level system wichita causes satisfaction as you level up. And in halos case it is that case to the extreme, especially when you get to higher levels.

cZ ShOcK | 11.03.12 7:25 AM

you surprised me 343 industries
I LOVE YOU Smile

Waroull | 11.03.12 7:41 AM

Sierra B293 Make it exclusive to Waypoint only. Sick of all these whiney people wanting just to see some silly number next to their name. I know that I am getting better at the game by continually doing well, you don't need some number to tell you that.

Siarra, people grow differnitly. You may not need it, but it wont hurt you it being there. it only makes a lot of people happy. Ofc we get better, but it brings more motiavtion to it, with an idication of how well you are peforming compared to others. So your arguement doesnt hold stick imo.

ForgedExodus | 11.03.12 8:15 AM

And with this, Halo 4's main haters group is diminished.

We all love 343industries. You guys worked hellahard on this one. Congratz. <3

thanks 343i best gaming company i have ever. I am a bungie fan or was until i noticed the move you guys just made we cried for years and bungie did nothing about reach we cried for days and 343 scrambled to please fans on a game that's gold and has not been released if you people bootleg this game and do not buy it shame on you we need to support this company we are 343 this is the first time you will pay 60 dollars for a video game and know every penny was spent on pleasing you.... i would like visible rank but i want what everyone wants a ranking system is good enough for me to settle on and 343 talking to us and giving us is unbelievable i love 343 and please don't bash this company greatest group i have ever seen trust me.

XI unknownz IX | 11.03.12 8:52 AM

This was really only an attempt to appease the competitive crowd, they really changed nothing from Reach except now we have a  BPR in each playlist, while I think its cool they are listening to us, this is not what I and many others alongside me wanted.... We want it in game, it is not to show off or to put other players down with.. It is to see where I fit in and give me something to strive for each game, basing it on W/L is important to and encourages teamwork. BPR was useless, i could stat-whore every game and lose but id still have a decent bpd. I loved h3 after i won or lost praying that make rank would go up or hoping it wouldnt go down. THats where all the fun was. Please make it visible in game , PLEASE 343. just give me one more bulletin of good news!!!!

BerruccI | 11.03.12 9:11 AM

Keep it Waypoint or profile only, how many times did you see people quit when there was a team of 50's on the other side of the lobby?

System will still be ranking you properly + showing it in the lobby is not required imho. As long as you have quick access to it (smartglass/profile etc.) what else matters. Competetive players want a much deeper drill down on progress and stats than a number in a lobby anyway.

Good news even if it is not visible in the lobby.

XI unknownz IX | 11.03.12 9:22 AM

Berrucci this is wrong on so many levels. If they didnt show the highest CSR achieved on the stat card but instead only showed the CSR as a number on a per hopper basis (a 48 in slayer pro for example) next to the persons name in that playlist, then you would only be paired up with 50s. No lvl 48 is going to quit out because he sees a 50, that is what makes me stick around and be like I want to beat these 50s! Showing it in lobby is most definitely required. I want to see where my opponents and teammates are ranked in that playlist so i can get a general idea of how good a game it will be. And no, competitive players like me want an access to a number in lobby, as you can see form the multiple requests for visible in game CSR above. do not put words in our mouths. We want to see a CSR visible next to our name in-hopper and see that we are being paired up with similar people of similar skill. Awful news if its only on waypoint cuz i will never have anyideahowgoodpeopleinmygameare.

Waroull | 11.03.12 10:17 AM

People wont quit games if you punish their rating/csr. then people would give it a chance everytime. And make you lose double up if you quit a game even in the lobby,

UNSC Chewy | 11.03.12 10:44 AM

Cool, this didn't make or break the game for me but it's awesome to see 343 cares about its community so much, and with Smartglass available in EVERY device a person owns, there's no reason for it to be visible in-game, that just promotes cheating and boosting.

Madhafaca | 11.03.12 10:50 AM

Oh Yes!
I haven't played H4 yet, and I already think that you, 343i have outdone bungie.
Much love and respect to you guys, you've nailed it.
I've read in reviews that Campaign has a harder difficulty overall (which I celebrate), so all this CSR idea suits well to the game.
Having this CSR visible to other players will be great. Also, making that 'competitive and social' playlists division will be neat, since there are players that just wanna have a good time and don't care that much about winning and "being the best".

XI unknownz IX | 11.03.12 10:53 AM

UNSC Chewy... Not everyone has the ability to get smartglass, i dont have a smartphone and I DEFINITELY do not want to have to check waypoint after every game i play to see how my rank was affected. I want to also see my teammates and opponents ranks which i cant do if it is only on waypoint. How does 1-50 being visible encourage cheating? it doesnt at all. and boosting? that was only in halo 3 becasue of the direct correlation it had to the xp system. It definitely needs to be displayed as a number in game in each competitive hopper/playlist. If it is not on stat-card that is ok... but make us see ranks in the hoppers please 343!!

ADRENALINE15 | 11.03.12 11:26 AM

Visible skill rank in game is a must. Please make that happen! No one wants to constantly go to halo waypoint to see what their rank is.

I LEFT CAPS 0N | 11.03.12 11:36 AM

So... Camping with power weapons each match is a "skill"?

OsiniKs | 11.03.12 11:39 AM

This is what we all have wanted. Without competitive game play there wouldn't have been a reason to play this game beyond the campaign. Good going 343, you guys definitely earned my respect.

WMWWWWMWWWWWWMM | 11.03.12 11:52 AM

SAD NEWS THAT IT WILL ONLY BE INTERGRATED ON HALO WAYPOINT AND NOT ON THE ACTUAL GAME,IT NEEDS TO BE VISIBLE ON HALO 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 343 IT NEEDS TO BE VISIBLE

WMWWWWMWWWWWWMM | 11.03.12 12:09 PM

If it is in the game 343 needs a better banhammer than bungies maybe in game recording to get rid of cheaters and boosters faster or maybe there could be a way of reporting these players on halo 4

please but visible rank!=))

shov3 it | 11.03.12 5:32 PM

Boo this was just a quick attempt to satisfy the competitive crowd and although some have fallen for it now when they get in the game and can't find their rank. Well prepare for a Yoink!storm. Some people don't have access to a computer all the time I don't see why its such a burden to just add it into the game!

XI unknownz IX | 11.03.12 6:18 PM

Its not like we will even be in the game with lower skilled people so I dont know why we cant have it visible.  Make it visible or this will be no better than BPR. I enjoy this game because it is an incredible game DUOed with the fact that it takes INSANE SKILL and is extremely COMPETITIVE and i would like to have a visible rank to make this worth playing. BO2 is going to have one.... why not us

chadjohnsontime | 11.03.12 6:36 PM

The Good

It allows you to be placed in matches with other players with a similar "CSR", increasing the chances of having a balanced match.

It is a 1-50 rank that goes up or down depending on your "Match Outcomes", which I hope means wins and losses, not your personal score.

You get a ranking for different gametypes ie CTF or Slayer, so there is a more precise rank for a player's varying skills over the different game types.

The Bad

The "CSR" is invisible. The only way you can see ones "CSR" is by looking on the internet at their waypoint profile.

This is bad because you will not be able to evaluate your competition level while you are playing

It is also bad because you can not view your own progress, which can kill the motivation to play competitively. Who wants to be constantly going onto their computers and onto the internet and logging onto their halo waypoints to see the level of competition they have reached?

WHY AREN'T YOU ALLOWED TO SEE YOUR OWN RANK IN GAME?

JUST MAKE IT INVISIBLE TO EVERYONE ELSE, OR EVEN GIVE AN AVERAGE RANK FOR YOUR TEAM AND THE OPPOSING TEAM FOR THE LOBBY TO SEE!!!

It is fun to see how you're rank is growing or shrinking as you are playing, and it keeps you motivated to win. Hopefully their is a patch in the future that allows one to see his own CSR in-game.

Execution Swag | 11.03.12 9:01 PM

Thank you 343, please take your time, perfection is key!!!

BarbedWire Fire | 11.03.12 10:47 PM

Ok, I echo that we need to make it visible.  That's what makes Halo, Halo.  My issue is with all these people that don't want their individual K/D spread to affect their score as much as whether or not they won.  Seriously?  Should be the opposite.  If I get paired up with a bunch losers that blow the game and I have an incredible game, my rank should go down?  If the game is Slayer, only one thing matters:  kill and not be killed.  If I have a +15 and lose, I should be penalized for losing but still be rewarded for being the best player on the map.  If it's Slayer make it based on K/D with a bonus or penalty for winning and losing.  That way people who perform poorly can't be dragged up the ranking system by their friends.  If you keep coming out with positive K/D spread your rank keeps going up.  You'll level out when you meet your match.  Plain and simple.  You want to play little league where everyone gets a trophy, go to the YMCA.

Lobo 0084 | 11.04.12 12:33 AM

Please make it visible in game.  And then allow us the option, both in waypoint and in game, to hide our CSR.  Thus, if your recreational, you can take it out of the equation completely (instead of having it shoved in your face after every match).  And if your competitive but don't want to give your opponents too much of an edge, you can keep it to yourself.

Seems a perfectly viable method.  Make it hard true-skill (ala halo 2, not 3), and ban hackers.  Boosters didn't stand a chance back then anyhow, only modders.

HM Renato | 11.04.12 2:48 AM

Great!

PecanChopper | 11.04.12 3:32 AM

Did you guys not read this correctly?? It says the CRS skill ranking numbers will ONLY BE AVAILABLE FOR VIEW IN HALO WAYPOINT.. NOT IN GAME, AND BY YOUR SPARTAN PLAYER CARD.. So while you're praising 343 for all this work, bear in mind they royally screwed us over with this one..

lKillConfirmedl | 11.04.12 4:07 AM

The FAQ says "Waypoint will assign each player a visible and detailed Skill Rank, viewable in the player profile section of Halo Waypoint."

THE RANKS HAVE TO BE EASILY VISIBLE IN-GAME (AND NOT BURIED IN MENUS EITHER)! If anyone reads this and you agree, make sure you comment saying that you want the ranks to be visible in-game. If enough people say they want it, 343 is more likely to make it visible in-game.

lKillConfirmedl | 11.04.12 4:15 AM

Hopefully, it'll be like Halo 2's ranking system and not Halo 3's. Halo 3 had a decent ranking system, but Halo 2's system was infinitely better. Halo 2's system accurately differentiated skill. In Halo 2, I never got passed level 36 even after playing it almost everyday for three years. In Halo 3, I reached 50 in the first 3 weeks of its release. In Halo 2, if you were a 36 and went up against a 39, you knew that they were going to be better than you. But in Halo 3, you couldn't tell, it was way too easy to rank.

XI unknownz IX | 11.04.12 10:40 AM

I definitely think making it visible in game is a must. I want to understand where my opponents and teammates skills lie without having to look up 7 people on a laptop before the match. I also want to have that instant incentive to win and that instant gratification and hoping that number next to my name goes up after I played clutch to pull out the win. Cmon 343 make it visible please!

nV Locklin | 11.04.12 2:28 PM

Ericstifer | 11.04.12 3:59 PM

I like the idea of the smartglass integration. im sure that halo 4 smartglass app will let you view lobbies before the game and have their ranks shown from there. gives a really good incentive to use the app! i imagine that atlas will be a part of the smartglass too. really need to get a tablet now....ive been waiting for the surface 2 that is coming out early next year but if this is really going to be as big as i think it will i may have to get one sooner...

super pumped for halo 4!

Dorwrath | 11.04.12 5:25 PM

Not visible in game please.

I have no desire to go back to the childish mentality that plagued Halo 3 or having to play Ebay bought accounts or have my games ruined by boosters.

I have no desire to listen to racism and sexism that came with the Halo 3 ranking system all because you were not a 5 star general.

if it has to be in game then have the option for players to make it invisible to all if they so choose.

IThanks for making this more right.. BUT...

A big... Please!!!

Do one more thing right....?
Make the players skill number viewable in game!  I want to see my number in game and I want to see my competitors numbers..

If we all get matched closely by skill it's not like it'll be degrading for anyone..

Believe it.. People don't want to have to go to waypoint to see their skill - it should be at least viewable in the game - even if its not on the team screen next to your name !
Thanks and please consider....

It's already bad enough I have to go to waypoint in game ( campaign) .. People love being able to see their number in game.. And if you get matched closely with other ranks there is no problem

RBR Afterlife | 11.05.12 7:28 AM

why is everyone so happy with this ? i'm happy with the level system like you are but you people do realise you can only view it here on halowaypoint ???  why the happy face..... it's stil Yoink!ty, we stil see no visible ranks in each playlist online. if they dont make it visible online halo 4 is gonne die out within the year or so just like reach. give us visible levels in each playlist, listen to your fanbase for the love of god. don't waste all your money by not putting it in.

Demonomania | 11.05.12 4:17 PM

I'm very happy we'll have a ranking system that can be accessed through Waypoint but in-game ranking is what's actually needed.    : l

DougMerc | 11.05.12 6:01 PM

Not having ranked matches in Reach made me not wanna play that game, and I barely did. Halo isn't Halo without ranked multiplayer matches. Bring it back like it used to be, please!

Seredhiel | 11.05.12 6:10 PM

Props to 343 for putting ranks up on Halo Waypoint and not on the screen in lobbies, Halo 3-style. Ranks in lobbies only mean the Halo 3 "50" garbage all over again with taunting lower ranks, deranking and stat boosting not to mention selling higher ranked accounts. It'll be nice to have the best of both worlds, which is a ranking system similar to Halo 3 but an invisible in-game ranking system like Reach's.

You have no idea how happy I am right now Laughing

I disagree.  Showing rank has nothing to do with boosting.  In Halo 3 you couldn't boot anyone if they killed you as they did over and over - well ok you could boot them - after they eventually added booting betrayers - because they added it when no one was playing halo 3 anymore .... Maybe around the time Reach came out..

Also 343 has in incentives to promote team work like protecting team mates gives you more experience points... U know?  Rank up faster

StringentHydra9 | 11.05.12 9:58 PM

50 here I come!!!!!!!

F1awless 1 | 11.07.12 5:36 AM

This is great however it would be amazing if it was visible in game. A lot of people will be completely unaware of its existence otherwise. In my opinion a true skill system will not work unless players are motivated to WIN and not LOSE every game, lack of a ranking system results in a lot of players either not caring about winning or purely padding their own stats. Its not much fun playing wih team mates who are only concerned with their k/d rather than helping to win the game (there is a huge difference). If players don't play to their true ability due to the above then machmaking is also less effective as their true skill is not accurately refelcted.

Boosting was the only noticeable problem with halo 3 to me. I'm sure 343 are capable of implementing a system to prevent / discourage this. Even if not, having an in game ranking system with a minority boosting is infinitely superior to no in game ranking system. I played huge amounts of halo 3 and it was rare that a high level player

F1awless 1 | 11.07.12 5:42 AM

(continued) was not actually highly skilled. The selling of accounts was occasionally apparent in social (bought accounts did not stick around in ranked at all) and therefore did not affect anyone so was a non-issue for me. Also I didn't find boosting to be a major issue either, it affected me negatively only in a minority of games and it didn't make anyone magically capable of a 50, only artificially increased their level by a couple of levels and sped up the process.

PureDesj8 | 11.07.12 8:29 AM

I hope they make some kind of ranked playlist or something like h3..

Markkampuja | 11.18.12 9:32 AM

If there won't be social and rank playlist like in Halo 3 it will suck and not being true skill ranking system...

wtf, you have to get on here(waypoint) to see your rank, thats pointless, your rank should be next to your name while playing!!!!!!!!    ex.    name     rank
                                                 sniper22   26
                                                 bob6243    24

LudusWeb | 11.20.12 2:30 PM

So the skill based ranks are only "viewable in the player profile section of Halo Waypoint".
That sucks. We don't want to log on to the website and search for people to see their ranks; we want to see people's ranks in the actual game.
We want to look at teammates and opponents ranks at the start of a matchmade game.

The only reason I could see for 343 making this decision is to cater for the not-very-competitive crowd, because a skill based rank shown to them in game would be negative feedback on their play: 343 don't want the game to tell less skilled players that they're bad.

Halo is a competitive game and should be played competitively; the game should give visible feedback on how well a player is doing this, and that feedback should take priority over (or at least be equal to) ranking systems based on time investment.

Burnie008 | 11.21.12 1:48 PM

I played Halo 2 for years because of the ranking system. I bet I stop playing this game regularly before February. Give us the Halo 2 ranking system. People who are complaining about the modders and boosters should just play social games and leave the real games to the real halo players. I play to win, not to get experience and show everyone how long I've been playing. Very disappointed in the game so far.

Zombie Lawyer | 11.21.12 2:02 PM

Ranks won't be visible in the pre-game lobby?  Ugh, extremely disappointing.  That takes so much fun out of it.

And why is this only being released in 2013?  There's no excuse for this not to have been a feature at launch.  And if you're going to take that long, PLEASE at least give us proper viewable in-game ranks.  343, Halo 4 is a good game, but you've really dropped the ball by neglecting the competitive community.

QuintsDaddy | 11.22.12 6:33 PM

Can someone explain to me why I have to sign in to halo waypoint to see my competitive ranking? I can't think of a single reason not to put a tiny number next to my name or SOMEWHERE in Halo 4 that shows what rank I am. Please do this, I need it to be happy.

QuintsDaddy | 11.22.12 6:46 PM

Without a proper competitive ranking system, don't expect a lot of us to come back for your next Halo. The ranking system in Halo 3 is a reason I'm still playing it today and haven't bought Halo 4 yet. I'm going to wait if you get this one right first.

please 343 the only way to introduce this ranking system is if its visible in-game. halo 3 was brilliant online for a good reason and as a competitive halo junkie i am very disappointed its not already been done. 1-50 is the only way to do it as it wasn't broke so don't fix it.
i also think the ranked playlist should be introduced with MLG, Team snipers ect. this was the essence of online halo....don't kill it keep it alive.

NoHandI3Bars | 12.02.12 2:03 AM

Please put this feature in-game the way it was displayed in Halo 2 and Halo 3, otherwise it will be ignored by the majority of the Halo 4 community.

I'd like to mention that a competitive ranking system must be used in the Halo series for this fundamental reason: Most people that play Halo are playing to win. This is not true of games like Call of Duty that use the progression ranking system. In Call of Duty, players play to rank up, get achievements, and unlock titles and emblems; very few play to win the match. The opposite is true in Halo, which is why a progression system does not work for the Halo franchise. The progression ranking system used in Halo 4 tells me how much a player has played, it does not tell me how good the player is.

Most importantly, a competitive ranking system encourages players to improve by matching them against other players of a similar skill-level.

Make the change, display it in game. Please.

Love,
A Halo Fanatic

Question regarding this. Are there going to be seperate ranked and social playlists as H2/H3 had?

Just do it like H3 did. have seperate ranked and social lists, someone mentioned coding, no, the templates are already in place, just needs to be integrated into the system so some minor coding yes.

yes there are boosters and derankers .... aka BKs ..... simple solution for derankers is to simply not allow it, once you have it you're stuck with it. It would be nice to have an option to report folks for deranking ..... who knows ..... that would make sense so I'd say don't look for it. Personally I liked running solo in ranked play lists, the team mates tended to be more motivated to use calls, even if it was only MY X lol. I did that for a long time myself until I learned the proper calls, and they were motivated to win.

Obviously I have no issue with social players and that's why I enjoyed the different social/ranked play lists. I think I was a colonel in social social slayer. Good times. Didn't care if I won but did quite a bit. I enjoyed the way you could approach the game with a different mentality. Tryhard mode, go ranked, who cares mode, go social. Met tons of players I still run with to this day in social slayer.

At the end of the day, IMO, both ranked and social lists have their place and yes, it's decidedly healthier for the game to NOT try and mix the two, keep them separate.

Sorry for the caps on my last comment, I dont know how that happened.

I've been playing halo since the beginning, h2 and h3 were great. The reason they were great? It's simply, a visible 1-50 ranking system. Halo is by far my favorite game, but if 343 does not intergrate a visible ranking system soon I'm going to stop playing and will not buy any more halo games. A visible rank adds so much more depth to the game. I know people are worried about derankers and boosting, if it bothers them that much let them play social playlists. It's simply if 343 is not going to listen to their costumes and try and replicate cod then I might as well switch to cod. They know what kind of game they want, while halo is trying to catch up to them and lost sight of what made it different and great.

Things halo 4 needs in order to be good: More playlists, i give a Yoink! if not everyone plays them, but cmon... multi team, team doubles, rumble pit.. Yoink! regicide.
A 4 kill BR to the HEAD, DMR outdoes BR by alot in every aspect of combat.
Ranking system visible in game, Yoink! halo waypoint sincerely
Military ranks or somethig difficult to level, 130 cap is too easy, make ranks be affected by skill. Yoink! specializations putting more into the game wont help at all,
Copy and paste if u wna save H4! Sory if i was excessive with the language but its the way i feel about it, 343 LISTEN TO US, your game is worth saving but it isnt halo anymore, no matter what you say, its already getting boring and it hasnt been out for 2 full months yet! Change what has to be done and youll have the 400k players halo used to and deserves, otherwise conssider it dead in less than a year, period.

As everyone else has said, needs to be visible in game! I'm hoping every playlist has its own separate rating as well. Thank you 343, you have kept Halo alive for me by adding this! :,)

You all are right that no one uses waypoint. I will just go on once in a great while to see if anything cool and new shows up for stats…but i'm just left with 10 minutes wasted every time. If 343 is going to do a true skill (type) rank — WHICH THEY DAMN WELL SHOULD — then they need to make it easy access for all teammates to drool over and opponents to cower to.

Do the right thing for the true halo children just like you 343. Bring it back and do us right.

343 is most likely only going to make the csr visible on there site waypoint to get website hits. Im 99.999% sure of that due to the fact they haven't listened to the community yet. In my oppion make csr visible or dont put it in at all me and alot of people wont go to a site to see a rank. If its not visible to all on the update ill take what i can get for the discs which at this rate will be close to $10 by the time they do the update. Its pathetic jan 28th and theres only 30k players annually. Halo 4 is dying and Call Of Duty and battlefield are growing. I find it more competitive to play uno than Halo 4 thanks 343 for inconsistant gameplay. Isnt it funny how there was no beta reason Halo 4 was the beta we were dooped into paying 66 dollars for a beta lmao Call Of Duty here comes 20k more players lol.
